Hewley Retainer and an allergy to surgical steel?
I am going to be getting my braces of soon and I have been looking into the fact that my doctor said that he would be giving me the clear plastic retainer since I have an allergy to most metals (including surgical grade Stainless Steel). I was wanting to know how long those retainers tend to last because I am going to have to wear them for the rest of my life. Or would I be better off getting the Hewley retainer and dealing with the symptoms of the metal allergy because of the durability of the retainer?
The allergy symptoms of having the braces include frequent chapped lips, dry mouth, small blisters, and very rarely little soreness
Your health comes first. I would definitely listen to the doctor and get the clear retainer.
Any allergic reaction gets progressively worse if the causative factor is left in there.
Severe allergic reaction can send you in the hospital also with respiratory distress.
Since you are allergic to the metal and will require the retainer for the rest of your life, you HAVE TO get the clear one regardless of the cost and durability.
It should last for a reasonable period of time if you don't grind your teeth, and handle the retainer with care.
