2010 Pottstown Carousel Collectible Ornament by atopthetbl

A fundraising effort to benefit the building fund for the Derek Saylor Memorial Carousel at Pottstown, the numbered collectible is a solid brass 3-D ornament that features three of the carousel's animals as well as the signature shape of the carousel's rounding boards.

The ornaments are packaged with a clear cover to showcase the 9 colors and etching that decorate the three animals which are positioned to provide depth to the collectible. It also includes a numbered information card as well.

â'This collectible allows anyone to bring the design and artistry of the colorful figures of the carousel into their home â'†even if it's in a much smaller version,â' said George Wausnock, Carousel board president.

(Word Problem) How many of each type ornament should he make to maximize his profit?

An artist can make two kinds of ornaments, free standing or hanging. He can make at most 50 ornaments each week, and the greatest number of hours he can work in a week is 70. It takes 2 hours to make a free standing ornament and 1 hour to make a hanging ornament.
His profit is $9 for each free standing ornament and $12 for each hanging ornament. How many of each type ornament should he make to maximize his profit?

Can anybody tell me how to solve this problem?

Linear programing.

Let x = number of hanging ornaments
Let y = number of free standing ornaments

x + y <= 50
x + 2y <= 70
and add
x >= 0 and y >= 0

We want to maximize the value of
12x + 9y

We have 4 points on the enclosed area to test, and can eliminate one as very obviously a minimum, where x =0 and y = 0

First point to test is where
x + y = 50
x + 2y = 70
x = 30 and y = 20

12x + 9y = 12*30 + 9*20 = $540
