Decorating Apartment Fireplace (UGLY!!)?
I am about to take over a lease of one friend to room with another friend through December... The apartment is spacious, but NOT new or overly elegant and EXTREMELY plain. The walls are all white and it is very open in the long but rather narrow living room. In the center on the white wall is a white brick fireplace with a white mantle! It's a disaster!!! What can we do to liven this place up, as the fireplace should be the focal point of the room and now it just blends in! I dont think we are allowed to paint, so whatever we do has to be temporary!

If you are not allowed to paint, period, then that options out the window, but typically, they would be willing to let you paint the apartment if they like the look afterwards, or if you agree to repaint it back to it's original color when you move out.
As for decorating, if you can end up painting, a good warm color will be good for a living room. Something pale, so you only notice it as a hint of color. A good warm color for a living room would be a bit of yellow or red. You can accessorize the walls with photos/paintings, any sort of framed work. Something coherent with the atmosphere of the apartment, so the ambience is unfaltered. You may want to leave the fireplace, however, plain white. I'm assuming this is a simple brick fireplace, painted over in white. Add some decor to the fireplace region to hide some of the ugly factor and bring out a homey-ness. You want to be sensible if you use this fireplace, so don't place drapery on it, and make sure any decoration is not in danger of lighting up and setting the rest of the place on fire. Get a set for the fireplace, a nice looking set with a sweep and poker and such, and perhaps an aesthetic barrier or screen, which should look like it matches with the firplace set. Try some vases of decorative plants, real or fake (you know, the Martha Stewart thing). candles, framed photos, etc. Also, if there is barely even a mantle, it may be possible for you to find a mantle to top it off, make it look a little better with crown moulding and such. Accent it with a little pile of logs on the side and a bin for the newspaper.
