More Great Information on Macro Algea:
Could this diy refugium work?
I have a 10 gallon nano reef and I had this idea to take a topfin HOB filter (rated for 30 gallons) and grow cheato or macro algea in it, i have a led fixture that has 3 white lights and a blue light, would this be enough to keep the algea alive? Suggestions? Ideas?
HOB fuge's are tricky. It's hard to get enough light. And if you get enough light, it spills over in the main tank, which is not ideal.
It's best to have a fuge on a reverse light cycle to stabilize pH swings. If you have light spill over into the main tank, it can be a nuisance.
Most likely the LEDs you have will not have enough output to sustain chaeto.
Have you already bought the topfin HOB? I'm not a big fan of those, they're very basic for the price you pay. For DIY stuff like this I prefer Aqua Clear HOBs. They're bigger, so when you gut the box you have more room to work with.
