What's up with the Easter Island statues?

Why are they there? Why do they all face the ocean? Who built them? What's all the drama?

I saw on the History Channel that it was about competition. The race of people that lived there at that time was extremely competitive with one another. It was sort of like big houses today. Eventually their competitive nature led to their destruction. They became so obsessed with building the statues that they spent all their time doing it and ran out of food. I wish I had more information, but I only caught the tail end of the program.
