Where do I find information on the evolution of the human skull?
I have to do a Biology project on the evolution of the human skull and need some help on where to find good and reliable information. Im looking for what the skull was shaped like, what the species is and why it was shaped the way it was. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!
There are a few key points to remember about the evolution of the human skull. One of the most important of these, is the placement of the foramen magnum. The foramen magnum is the aperture or hole on the back of the skull in which the spine fits into. If you notice by looking at people (better to look at skeletons) or feeling the back of your head with your hand, you'll notice that the skull sits pretty much on top of the spine. This was not always so - it took millions of years for this placement to occur. Going backward in evolutionary time, across all of our previous ancestors, you would notice the foramen magnum shift from its current position, up much higher on the back of the skull, that is, the hole would be positioned such that the head would not sit on top of the spine but rather, the spine would extend more outward from the rear of the skull. Eventually, you'd get back to the apes we descended from and see that the hole is much higher behind the skull. Look at the modern apes. This position was crucial for quadrupedal movement (walking on all fours). Conversely, the position of the foramen magnum now allows us to walk upright or erectly, on our two legs.
Another key feature is the shrinking 'supra-orbital ridge'. Back then (or look at modern apes) the bone above our eyes was much more pronounced, i.e. it stuck out way more. Over the years, this ridge has decreased in size considerably to the point in our current evolutionary stage, wherein it is almost nonexistent - look at your face in the mirror.
Lastly, The human skull is now also considerably flatter at the front and contains a flattened chin and a jaw or mandible shaped to foster a U-arrangement of teeth; the ape mandible exhibits a rectangular shape. Our canines and incisors were also much larger a long time ago.
