Breeding Bettas - How It Works by BreedingBetta
Like any type of breeding animals, execution must be exact and the process is quite complicated. You might be interested about breeding Bettas so read on. Before you start breeding Bettas, it is important to know the basic information. Actually, the male Betta is the one who will look after the eggs and the young. The only work the female Betta has to do is laying the eggs. This short article is dedicated to the beginner Betta breeder. The first step is to condition both the male and female Betta fish. A good conditioning plan involves feeding both fishes with worm twice a day. You then have to prepare the breeding tank. A bare tank is a good breeding place. The filter must be on one side and must not be running until the male Betta is out. For the breeding place, you can put a floating plant where the male Betta can breed under it or a cut out styro foam and taped on the side. A heater can be placed on side of the tank as it is necessary to keep the water temperature steady. Keeping a warm water temperature is very crucial since the baby Betta fish won’t have labyrinth organ just yet. The cold water and air will instantly kill them.
On the first day of breeding, the male Betta should have created a nest of bubbles and the female Betta should be barred and dancing. If the female Betta is doing otherwise and looking scared, it means she is not ready to breed yet. Be patient and give it time. You will know if the female Betta is confident enough for breeding when it is showing rich colorful stripes. This will make the male Betta’s work much easier. Allow the female Betta to stay just until after nesting is done. Other helpful signs during breeding are when the male Betta fish is doing a dance and is trying to attract the female Betta into the nesting place. Once the female Betta is ready, just releases her and should do a similar dance as that of the male.
Both Betta fishes should embrace under or above the nesting place. Wrapping bodies with the other will take time and before any eggs will fall in the nesting area. When done successfully, the male Betta will transfer the egg in the nesting place using the mouth. Breeding bettas is a long process and may take one to seven hours of breeding time.

Good caves and hiding spots for a betta fish?
I have a 10 gallon betta tank I'm in the process of setting up for my betta boy - in a two gallon currently - I've got the live plants and heater, and thermometer, now I just need the filter ( I know which one I'm buying) and also some hiding spots... I had a few ideas, I want to buy a floating betta log, driftwood, and I also want to try and make a cave from PVC pipe, only I dunno if you can use glue to get the gravel to stay on??? and I already bought one of those sand castles from Pet Smart in the medium size, but now that Iook at it, the opening in the front seems to small for my pretty big betta, and it's already happened where one of my bettas got stuck in the opening of a cave and died... bad experience, don't wanna go through it again, but the large is big and will take up about half the bottom of the tank... so I was wondering if I should still get it, or if not what nice caves and hiding places I could put in for my betta?
There are a few ideas that you can consider to make "hiding places" for your betta.
1. Heavily plant the/ part of the tank to provide an area of cover, security and for further exploration.
2. Your betta would no doubt very much appriciate some broad leafed plants to rest on, rather than the bottom of the tank. Silk plants usually do the job perfectly.
3. A small ceramic pot. These can make superb "Dens" for bettas - and their very easy to find too.
Whats more, there are several types that would be great. For example, small flowerpots from your local garden centre would do a fantastic job, and most Fish/Pet stores have hollow ornaments for decoration such as urns/jugs. They both make fantastic "hidey Spots" in which your betta can rest.
As for the large version of the sand castle ornament you described, if I were you, I would just use some of my ideas above. Not only are they most likely less expensive, but take up far less room, giving your aquatic friend more room to swim. Driftwood, unless hollow, would most likely be more for decoration, and would probably take up quite a bit of room. Your Floating Betta Log would be fine, although it depends whether you mind something floating all the time in your tank.
Finally, just a note that you make sure nothing in your tank has sharp edges that your betta could catch or scratch his fins on. Plastic plants are often guilty of such - so silk plants are an excellent idea because they have soft edges, and look more realistic. Even better, why not try some live plants, as they also provide more oxygen in the tank, even if Mr. Betta will get only 10%-20% of his oxygen from the water itself. Besides, it would benefit any tankmates you may decide to give him in time.
