New rat owner care advice needed?

I'm planing on getting two female rats for my twins birthday ( they will be 9) and they have been begging me for a pet for ages. Anyway I've decided that since I might end up looking after the animals, that I would enjoy a more intelligent rodent - so I decided on a rat.

I'm getting two but i don't really know what they need or enjoy. I've been looking at a cage, that's 75 x50 x157cm (LxWxH) - it has five plastic shelves and a removable plastic base for easy cleaning, but it is a wire cage. Is this suitable? Also any recommendations for good toys/houses - there are so many to choose from. Or any food brands/ how often and how much do they eat daily/ types of bedding/ how often should I clean them out/ how long do they need to be played with? or any other bits of useful information like any health care tips or anything that I've forgotten. Now, wire cages are preferred because they provide excellent ventilation and plenty of climbing opportunities. The dimensions of the cage you mentioned would actually fit up to ten adult rats, so it is definitely a good size!

They will need a quality lab block as a foundation to their diet. Two confirmed nutritious block brands are Harlan Teklad, and Oxbow Regal Rat, and two brands that are not nutritionally balanced and should be avoided are Kaytee Forti-diet and Mazuri. The staple of their diet should not be a seed mix, as these are rarely nutritionally complete, and if even when they are rats never eat everything in them, leaving gaps in their dietary needs. You may offer them a small amount of seed mix along with lab blocks, but avoid mixes with a lot of nuts and sunflower seeds as these can be very fatty. You will also need to supplement fruits, veggies, and whole-grain bread or pasta daily. Feed fruits in moderation though, as large amounts can cause diarrhea. They don't have mealtimes like humans do, and should always have food available to them.

They will also need fresh water readily available everyday. They should have a water-bottle with at least 16oz if not 32oz which should never empty and be changed regularly. On hot summer days you may decide to place a bowl of water inside their cage for them to drink, swim, play, and cool off in.

You have a lot of options when it comes to bedding, and there are very few ways to go wrong when choosing a bedding for your rats. NEVER use Cedar or Pine wood shavings, as they are poisonous to rats. They give off phenols and acids which, when inhaled by rats, can cause chronic respiratory infection, liver disease, and glottal cancer. An affordable alternative to Cedar and Pine is Aspen shavings. It can sometimes be dusty though, and cause your rats to sneeze. There are also many recycled wood pulp beddings that are great options for rats. You might decide to use Yesterday's News cat litter as a bedding, as it is made from recycled paper pellets that are highly absorbent and fight odor fairly well. It is inexpensive and safe, but you must make sure you get it UNSCENTED because the scented kinds can irritate rats' sensitive respiratory systems. You could also use shredded paper towels or newspaper (only if you contact the paper and ascertain that they use nontoxic ink!) or even plain paper. It is really up to you and what fits your budget and preferences.

They have open-rooted teeth, which means they never stop growing, so they will need plenty to chew on. You should provide wood chews, Cheesy Chews, and/or sticks which attach to the inside of cage walls and are coated with yummy snacks for your rats. Rats also very much enjoy shredding things, so you could give them toilet paper rolls and tissue paper for fun activities. They will need at least one nest box, which can be anything from shoe boxes to plastic igloos. Since the cage you are interested in is so large, you may decide to include several nest boxes. You should also give them things like old socks and PVC pipes to play in, or an old T-shirt to sleep in.

Rats are extremely social creatures and need to get at least two hours per day outside of the cage for playtime and exercise, as well as handling and socialization. Two hours is the minimum, but you can take them out to play as often and for as long as you like! If you would like to let them free range, you will need to rat-proof your house. This will mean tucking away anything that might look yummy or interesting, and covering any exposed wires or electrical cords.

Rats are prone to respiratory illness, so you should watch them for signs of infection at all times. Signs of this may include- sneezing, discharge from the eyes and nose, coughing, wheezing, mouth-breathing, and lethargy. Female rats are also very prone to mammary tumors, which most often are benign but can grow very large and become quite debilitating. Spaying significantly lowers the risk of developing mammary tumors in females, so that may be worth looking into.

Overall though, they just need to be loved and cuddled and handled gently. They are very intelligent and love to learn things, and can even be litter trained if you're willing to teach them. They are also very loyal and affectionate, and some of the most personable animals I have ever had the pleasure of owning. They are sure to grow to love you and your kids very much!
