The Canary Island Lanzarote by Douglas Scott
The Canary Islands are Spanish Islands. Lanzarote is one of these islands. It is the most north eastern of the Canary Islands. It is an island within the heart of the Atlantic Ocean whose people have created a privileged home of lava and ashes. It is situated on the most northern latitude and surrounded by volcanic peaks and beaches. Sand stretch dunes dot the coast line in white, gold and jet black. The kindness of a splendid sun, caught up in the rhythmic transformation of life on the Fortunate Island.
Lanzarote is a volcanic island and one of the worlds most exceptional centres for volcanic studies. The two last volcanic eruptions took place over a period of six years between 1730 and 1736 and again in 1824. The volcanoes lie dormant today .When explaining the origins of the Canary Islands, many resorts to the myth that they are the remains of the vast underwater continent of Atlantis. Although this theory does not carry much credence today it does serve to prove that Ancient Greeks were aware of the existence of the Islands which ware known to them as Hesperides. This is confirmed in the writers of Plato and Homer.
The economy in Lanzarote is mainly tourism, given employment to ninety percent of the workforce. In early days agriculture was the main industry.
Nightlife in Lanzarote is thriving and has a lot to offer, including bars and restaurants. Water sports are on offer in beach areas. There are approximately thirteen national parks with Timanfaya standing out. Visit during special times like summer and Easter when there is a carnival and join the crowd for some fun.
In Lanzarote they drive on the right hand side of the road and steering wheels are fitted on the left side of the car. Seat belts must be worn at all times. Breath tests are carried out randomly and non residents are subject to on the spot fines.
Surfing is good in Lanzarote. During the winter months of November to March waves reach heights of one and a half meters and hardly drop below head high. It is a dream spot for either the experienced surfer or beginners.
The weather in Lanzarote is normally hot all year round. However in some areas there can be extreme winds. During the winter months the temperature drops at nights, so it is advisable to bring cloths to wrap up in to keep warm.

They are thought to be of the Polynesian race. When they settled on Easter island it was well wooded, and abounded in small game and birds. It would appears that a second people also settled there at a later date.
Looking at those enigmatic statues, that stare out to sea, they seem to be subdivided into the 'long ears' and the 'short ears', representing the two different cultures. The population cut down most of the trees, to cut and use as rollers to transport the huge statues. The actual purpose of the statues, or what they represent, is unknown. Many unfinished statues remain scattered in the quarries where the rock came from. The people probably lived in crude shelters, and in caves, their lifestyle was primitive in the extreme. The flora and fauna was not as lush and plentiful as on other Pacific islands groups such as Otaheite (Tahiti nui) and Hawaii
Eventually, the food sources disappeared, and the people could not survive entirely from the sea. There may have also been ciivil or tribal war amongst the population. Any survivors could no longer subsist on the barren, windswept island, and are presumed to have sailed away if they were able to construct boats, which is doubtful due to the lack of available materials.
Their final fate remains a complete mystery.
