dirtbike cylinder/piston combination?
Hey guys. i got a yamaha yz125 2 stroke motorcross dirtbike. i am going to do a top end on it as a precuationary measure not becuase its blown. my cylinder is in good shape but not my piston. right now i have the athena cylinder on it. not sure what brand the piston is. my question is can i run a forged wiseco piston in the cylinder or should i run a cast piston. I have heard from guys that you cant run a cast piston in a cylinder desinged for forged or a forged piston in a cylinder designed for cast because of the tolerances?? the forged wiseco is 100 bucks and the namura tech is like 60 bucks so im not sure..... any help would be greatly aprreciated.
Like most things ya "hear from guys'',, that's incorrect.
There's no such thing as a "cylinder designed for Forged Piston" vs one designed for cast piston
Wiseco for one,,,has been putting forged pistons engines for years,,,and extruded pistons probably 4 times that long
Then consider Car engines,,,same deal.
Vast majority come with Cast Pistons,,,,and several Gazillion have been rebuilt with Forged,,,or Hypereutectic alloy pistons.
What "the guys" are confused about,,,and repeating what they misunderstood,,,is a matter of piston RING compatibility.
Chrome/and other plated bores CANNOT RUN CHROME-FACED rings.
Chrome Rings are an old-school effeort to improve Ring life.
But they'll destroy a plated bore vey quickly
Iron cylinder bores can run Any kind of ring...ductile iron,,nodular iron,,moly filled,, Hard Faced,,Chrome,whatever
It's practically "universally compatible" with all common ring materials,coating,treatments.
Athena jugs are PLATED,,,so you need rings compatible with that.
Tell Wiseco you have an Athena Cyl and you want a piston & rings for that.
