Try to find out which travel agency you are considering is helpful with. Agencies with
more extensive (think global) affiliations are more likely to be able to get you lower
prices and added favors for your vacations. Keep in mind, however, that just because they
are affiliated with a large group does not mean that the agency itself has to be bigger.
Common knowledge would suggest that the bigger the agency, the easier it is to negotiate
lower prices.

At last, ask for references from the agency of both clients and dealers. Clients of course,
are people like your self who have used the agency’s services to visit on vacations
earlier. Dealers are the people with whom the agency deals in order to purchase items such as
hotel rooms and airline tickets, and will often have a clearer thought of how the agency
operates and where or not they can do all that they claim as far as cost cutting and favors.
So, how does lower cost or cheap air travel works exactly simple a solution.

Getting son to college in central Florida, from Massachusetts.. should we drive or fly and buy new stuff?

I was planning to split driving with my teen to Florida, this august.(also 11 yr old in car) bur realized I'd be driving back alone. Never thought about the return trip. Any ideas on whether we 3 should fly and rent a car, buy new things for dorm, or drive? It's a 2-3 day trip breaking it up, right? any ideas on whether shipping UPS his things would be plausible? has anyone done this? thanks!

My dad (who is 75, btw) drive the FL to MA route at least 3 times a year, alone. He divides it up, stopping overnight at least once, usually twice. He takes what he calls "the inland route", which is NOT route 95 from MA to DC. The inland route is longer in miles, but often shorter in time due to less congestion, and it's a lot more pleasant.

How much stuff does your son have? If he has a lot, then shipping may be prohibitively expensive. You should contact UPS to get an idea for shipping rates by weight or box, and then do some calculations based on what your son plans to bring.

All three of your ideas are plausible - shipping, buying new, or driving. It depends on which one fits you the best. You're the one who has to do the shipping, buying or driving! What can you afford? Which can you bear?

Just a note - think about the future as well. How will he get home during school breaks? Where will he put his stuff in between terms? Storage? Bring it home? Ship it? He'll have more at the end of the year than he goes there with! Don't panic or anything  , but it's something to think through when you get home.
